Chapter Eighteen

Ryan couldn’t concentrate on work all morning. All he could think about was Denton and his threats. How could the man know? Those records had been destroyed years ago.

Katie had agreed to meet him for lunch. A lunch he had planned three months ago. No one, especially not Denton, would ruin it.

“Mr. Thiel, William is here,” Wendi said over the intercom.

He got out of the building without anyone else delaying him. Once inside the car, he leaned forward toward his driver. “We’re picking up Ms. Capone from her workplace.”

“Yes, sir,” William said.

He hummed as they got closer.

“Nervous sir?”

“Why do you ask?”

“You were humming, sir. You do that when you’re nervous.”

Ryan smiled. “So I am.”

The car pulled up in front of Katie’s office. She was standing on the curb, chewing on her lip. It was calming to see she was nervous too.

William got out and opened the back door. She hopped in, startled to see Ryan there.

“Hi.” It was all he could get out. God, she took his breath away. Her hair was down, the way he liked, and she smiled at him like he was the best thing in the world. He could get addicted to that look. Then her gaze moved down his body and she bit her lip. When she met his eyes again, it was with desire. The heat between them had grown unbearable. He put his arm around her and pulled her close. She didn’t pull away. Then he kissed her hard. After a moment she pushed him away. He couldn’t read the expression on her face.

“Not yet,” she whispered.

They pulled up outside his building.

“Where are we going?”

He smiled. “I thought we could eat at my place, if you don’t mind.”

She gave him a questioning look. “All right.”

As they entered the building, the doorman greeted them. “Good afternoon, Mr. Thiel.”

“Good afternoon, Conway. I’d like you to meet Ms. Capone. I do hope you will be seeing a bit more of her.”

She offered them both a big smile. “Very nice to meet you, Conway.”

“Yes, likewise, Ms. Capone.”

“You can call me Katie.”

Mr. Conway smiled. “Very nice to meet you, Katie.”

Ryan placed his hand on the small of Katie’s back to guide her to the elevators. They rode up in silence. Then the doors opened. Before them was Ryan’s condo. Katie looked to the floor. A pathway bordered with potted ferns led from the elevator to the dining room.

“Ferns?” she asked.

He nodded. Please don’t think this is cheesy. God, this is cheesy. “I remembered the photographs you took. You said you really loved nature and ferns. Too cheesy?”

He’d bought every fern in a twenty-mile radius.

He watched as she took it all in. The trail of ferns led to a table set with their lunch and a bottle of wine chilling. She continued to the windows. The condo did have the most breathtaking view of the city and the harbor. Katie put her hand on the window and just stared out for a moment. Then she turned, her hand to her mouth.
